In fact, the artists did a great job contrasting the vibrant '70s (orange wallpaper, anyone?) with the darker, bleaker post-apocalyptic future – which is especially noticeable as you're navigating the same rooms, corridors and outdoor areas.Īlso playable on iPhone and iPod touch, The Silent Age is a nostalgic throwback to adventure games, and developer House of Fire says Episode 2 will be free as well – though you'll be hit up for a voluntary donation at the end of Episode 1. The hands-drawn animation, sound effects and music are all top-notch (headphones recommended), and it all adds nicely to the game's chilling atmosphere. Your goal for this episode – which should take you a couple of hours to tap through – is to find a way to start an ambulance, fix its tire and drive off to continue your journey. Some of the time-travel puzzles reminded me of the 1993 classic, Day of the Tentacle, from LucasArts. Pretty basic puzzles for an adventure game, sure - including the obligatory search for keys that open doors and drawers - but it's very enjoyable nonetheless. You'll need to figure out how to light a fire in an underground sewer so that the smoke will rise through a vent and kill a hornet's nest, so you can enter a building. Similarly, you'll find a nightstick on a fallen policeman in the future and bring it back in time to smash a window in order to escape a room (and a throw rug to lay overtop the broken glass before you climb through). For example, you'll need to pour poison on a plant in the present so that it won't grow and block a passageway in the future. Through the course of this adventure, you'll travel back and forth through time, collect items for your inventory and use them to bypass obstacles. The building you're in is crumbling, trees have grown through broken windows and skeletons lie on the floor. When you tap on the portable time machine you're zapped 40 years in the future, where the world is in ruins. ![]()
